Do you hear what I hear? Christmas song countdown
I’ve mentioned previously that I’m pretty jazzed for this holiday season and have been really trying to embrace all things Christmas. I love the hustle and bustle of the holiday–the excited energy that everyone has, and the way that things simultaneously speed up because there is so much to do and see and prepare, while also slowing down (people are more willing to take time to visit, reach out to loved ones, and partake in activities that they otherwise might not make time for…).
One of the things I love most is the Christmas music. I know a lot of people hate when the stations switch over to non-stop holiday music, but as someone who spends a lot of time in her car commuting, it’s a nice change from the usual static of talky DJs and Top 40 hits. Christmas music also seems to help cast a magical spell on my mother, whose mood is often instantly improved the minute that we turn the “Sounds of the Seasons” on the TV (she’s currently sitting next to me, humming along to Frank Sinatra’s “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear”).
The other night when I was driving home from work I was thinking about the many Christmas songs out there and the specific versions that are most dear to me. The idea then struck to do a 25 Song Countdown ’til Christmas where I’d feature some of my favorite songs on the blog and give a little background as to why they are dear to me.
This was an unexpected add to this list, but I thought it was a good one to start off with, not only because it really embodies that hopeful spirit of the season that I find so endearing, but also because Perry Como was one of the more prominent Christmas carolers I remember hearing growing up (not sure if that was the influence of my grandparents or just what was popular on the radio “way back in the day,” as it doesn’t seem Perry Como’s renditions have really had the same lasting power as some of the other artists from his era).
