After years of holding space for grief, memory, and connection through the digital work of the Bury Me in NJ project, it felt like it was time to bring that energy into the physical world. We wanted to create something tangible, something that could carry the weight of what we’ve all been holding: the sorrow, the hope, and the calls to action for a more just, compassionate world. We started dreaming about what the Mourning Papers could be, feeling called by themes that have been central in our other work—grief, joy, resistance, and New Jersey—and leaning into a strong sense that there was much more to explore. And we knew the heart of this project would only reveal itself through collective contribution, so we put out a call.

The response was humbling. Raw reflections, personal stories of loss, incredible visual art, and urgent calls to action began pouring in. What emerged feels like a testament to the spirit of this region: a gift for a weary, brokenhearted world that honors what has been and imagines what might still be possible. Once we saw what was coming together, we knew it deserved a container that could hold the depth and heart of these offerings. Initially, we imagined this publication feeling more like a gritty, lo-fi zine, but the contributions asked for more. What’s come together feels closer to a prayer book from the Pines: a quiet, reverent piece that holds space for mourning and imagination, rooted in place and shaped by community. And we’re honored that we get to bring it into the world.

Our first issue is releasing into the world on September 22nd. Pre-orders are officially open, which includes options to purchase "Pay It Forward" copies so we can offer some free in community spaces.
